Hey, this is Dr. Steve Gangemi. In this video I want to talk about foods that can hinder, not only your health, but also your performance. So another type of food that you want to eliminate 100%, which you should be able to 100%, are all those artificial colors, sweeteners and preservatives, especially when you get into things like Splenda, which is sucralose and NutraSweet, which is Equal, these fake sugars.
NutraSweet has been linked to many neurological type diseases. Some will say they’re not proven, but, you know, it’s still a fake sugar. It still creates an insulin response in your body, in other words, it tells your body that sugar is coming. It tells your body that you need to be burning more sugar, and not fat, which causes hormonal disruptions, hormonal regulation issues, hormonal problems, basically.
The second type of sugar that people use today is Splenda, which is also known as sucralose, very commonly found, that’s the yellow packet. These are in a lot of foods today and also proven to suppress your immune system. They actually throw off healthy gut flora, that healthy gut bacteria that makes up over half your immune system in your digestive track. So you should ideally remove and eliminate the fake sugars from your diet. The blue packets, the NutraSweet and the yellow packets, the Splenda, and of course, even saccharine. That’s the one proven to cause cancer in laboratory rats; we don’t see that too much anymore. That’s your grandma and your grandpa drinking tea or coffee back in the day. Today we have more of the Equal and Splenda, so get those out of your diet.
Next, after those artificial sweeteners that we have, we have the refined sweeteners. That’s the high fructose corn syrup, which is very plentiful in the United States. And other parts of the world, we might just have bleached white sugar from either cane- actually in the midwest here in the U.S., we have more beet sugars. Really reduce as much of possible as you can of the white sugars. Try and eliminate all that high fructose corn syrup. It’s really not corn anymore.
Agave is another great type of sugar that you should eliminate and not use more of, even though it’s being touted as a health food type of sugar. Agave is pretty much as bad as corn syrup. It’s a highly refined fructose type sugar. High fructose corn syrup, high fructose Agave syrup, pretty much the same thing. Try and eliminate these, or reduce these as much as you can, along with the other type of white foods, which are those bleached white flours, those so-called whole grain type of products, whether it’s crackers, breads, those wheat products. There’s really not too much whole grain stuff out there anymore, unless it’s a whole grain rolled oat or a whole grain barley meal.
Most stuff is refined whether it says “whole grained” or not, and those are things you should try and eliminate as much as you possibly can. Again, be practical. It doesn’t mean you should never eat pizza, as long as you’re not having a problem with a wheat allergy or gluten sensitivity, or something like that, but, it’s not something you should be eating every day. Pasta and refined cereals and breads every day, try and eliminate them as much as you possibly can.
